Application Systems Analyst
Our client is seeking an Application Systems Analyst to evaluate, modernize, and beta test an existing Excel-based calculation tool used to support a specialized regulatory program. This role will assess the current tool’s functionality, research and compare alternative application options, recommend the most appropriate platform, and adapt the existing solution into a user-friendly, accurate, and maintainable application. The successful candidate will work closely with internal subject matter experts to understand business requirements, preserve critical calculation logic, and deliver a tested final product that can be used by both internal staff and external stakeholders.

This role is fully remote.

Application Systems Analyst Responsibilities:

• Review and develop a thorough understanding of the existing Excel-based calculator, including its functionality, calculations, inputs, outputs, and intended use.
• Evaluate the current solution against other commercially available applications and tools to identify the platform best suited to the organization’s operational and user needs.
• Develop and utilize a structured evaluation matrix to compare application options, including Excel and other appropriate solutions.
• Collaborate with internal subject matter experts to confirm requirements, intended functionality, calculation methodology, and desired outcomes.
• Provide a documented recommendation for the preferred application platform, including the rationale supporting the selection.
• Adapt and modernize the existing calculator into the selected application format while preserving the underlying calculation methodology and required outputs.
• Ensure the solution performs required calculations consistently and accurately based on user-provided project information.
• Build or configure the application to minimize manual data entry and streamline the user experience wherever practical.
• Incorporate clear data validation and error-identification features so users can quickly recognize missing, incomplete, or invalid information.
• Design the solution to be straightforward for users with varying levels of technical experience and accessible across commonly used devices and systems.
• Protect core formulas and calculation logic from unauthorized modification while allowing appropriate user input and future maintenance by designated internal staff.
• Beta test the updated application using project examples and information supplied by the client to identify calculation, usability, and functionality issues.
• Document beta testing results and make appropriate refinements based on testing outcomes and feedback from internal stakeholders.
• Participate in key project meetings and communicate progress, findings, recommendations, and potential issues throughout the engagement.
• Provide written and verbal documentation covering the existing tool, application evaluation, platform recommendation, testing results, and final solution.

Application Systems Analyst Qualifications:

• Expert-level Microsoft Excel experience, with 10+ years of demonstrated proficiency.
• Experience analyzing, evaluating, or improving business applications, tools, or automated calculation solutions.
• Strong ability to understand complex existing workflows, formulas, business rules, and calculation logic and translate them into an improved application solution.
• Experience evaluating multiple application or software options against defined business requirements and selection criteria.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate with subject matter experts to gather requirements and translate operational needs into application functionality.
• Experience with application testing, including validating calculations, identifying errors, and assessing usability.
• Strong attention to detail and a demonstrated commitment to producing accurate, consistent results.
• Ability to develop solutions that are intuitive for end users while minimizing opportunities for data-entry and user error.
• Ability to create or configure solutions that can be maintained and updated by internal staff without ongoing reliance on an external software specialist.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly explain technical findings and recommendations to non-technical stakeholders.
