CDI Team Lead
Our client is seeking a CDI Team Lead to provide leadership, auditing, and education within a high-performing clinical documentation team. This role is ideal for a confident subject matter expert who can guide experienced professionals, drive documentation quality, and influence clinical and coding practices through data-driven insights and collaboration. The ideal candidate brings a strong clinical foundation, sharp analytical skills, and the ability to coach and elevate team performance.
This role is fully remote.
CDI Team Lead Responsibilities
- Lead auditing and validation efforts to ensure accuracy, completeness, and clinical integrity of documentation and coding practices.
- Monitor CDI team performance, including documentation quality, query compliance, and alignment with regulatory and industry standards.
- Analyze trends in documentation, denials, and DRG assignment to identify gaps and implement improvement strategies.
- Provide coaching, feedback, and ongoing education to CDI specialists based on audit findings and performance metrics.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with coding, validation, and clinical teams to align on documentation standards and training initiatives.
- Review concurrent and retrospective cases to identify missed opportunities and ensure appropriate clinical representation.
- Support denial prevention efforts through clinical validation and targeted education for documentation improvement.
- Assist with onboarding and training of new CDI staff, ensuring consistency in processes and best practices.
- Contribute to process improvement initiatives, including workflows, tools, and documentation standards.
- Serve as a subject matter expert and escalation point for complex documentation or coding discrepancies.
- Maintain compliance with federal, state, and payer regulations, as well as industry guidelines.
- Step in to support operational oversight in the absence of leadership as needed.
CDI Team Lead Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Health Information Management, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 5+ years of experience in clinical documentation integrity, with strong auditing and validation expertise.
- Active RN license required.
- Advanced knowledge of CDI practices, DRG methodologies, and coding guidelines (ICD-10-CM/PCS).
- Experience working with regulatory requirements, reimbursement systems, and documentation compliance standards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead, coach, and influence experienced clinical documentation professionals.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with the ability to interpret data and identify trends.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with physicians and cross-functional teams.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
- Experience with CDI and coding tools such as encoder/grouper systems preferred.
- Relevant certifications such as CCDS or CDIP preferred.
- Master’s degree or advanced education preferred.
