Assistant Controller
Our community focused client is seeking an experienced accounting leader who combines strong technical expertise with a collaborative, people-focused approach. This individual will play a key role in overseeing core accounting operations, supporting financial compliance, mentoring staff, and partnering with leaders across the organization to drive sound financial decision-making. The ideal candidate is a thoughtful problem solver who communicates effectively with both financial and non-financial stakeholders and enjoys improving processes in a mission-driven environment.
This role is hybrid based in Portland, OR – requiring 1 day per week in-office.
Assistant Controller Responsibilities
- Lead general ledger activities, month-end close, account reconciliations, and financial reporting processes.
- Oversee payroll operations and ensure compliance with applicable tax, regulatory, and reporting requirements.
- Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning efforts in partnership with department leaders.
- Manage audit preparation, grant-related accounting activities, and compliance with funding and reporting requirements.
- Supervise and develop accounting staff while identifying opportunities for process improvements, automation, and stronger internal controls.
Assistant Controller Qualifications
- 5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including at least 3 years of full general ledger ownership.
- 3+ years of leadership experience managing and developing accounting or finance team members.
- Experience overseeing payroll functions, budgeting activities, and complex financial transactions.
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA designation or CPA-track strongly preferred.
- Healthcare, Medicare/Medicaid, Non-Profit or similar regulated industry experience highly preferred.
Salary: $110K-$150K/year. (DOE)
