Business Systems Analyst Responsibilities
- Partner with business stakeholders and technical teams to gather, analyze, document, and translate business needs into functional requirements and system solutions.
- Support the full System Development Lifecycle (SDLC), including requirements definition, functional design, configuration, development coordination, testing, implementation, and post-production support.
- Develop and maintain functional specifications, process documentation, system requirements, test plans, test cases, and other project documentation.
- Perform functional, unit, regression, integration, and user acceptance testing for system enhancements, fixes, upgrades, and new functionality.
- Coordinate testing activities across business and technical teams, document results, investigate defects, and support timely issue resolution.
- Analyze existing systems and processes to identify opportunities for system enhancements, workflow improvements, and increased operational efficiency.
- Participate in system configuration and functional design activities to ensure solutions align with business requirements.
- Review and evaluate application designs, data flows, database structures, interface specifications, reports, conversion plans, and technical documentation.
- Develop and execute SQL queries and scripts to retrieve, validate, move, or update data while maintaining appropriate controls and data integrity.
- Support data conversion, migration, backup, implementation, and deployment activities associated with system changes.
- Create ad-hoc reports and analytical tools to support business requirements, data validation, troubleshooting, and operational decision-making.
- Investigate and resolve production and sustainment issues by analyzing system behavior, data, processes, and business requirements.
- Respond to business customer questions regarding system functionality, enhancements, defects, and issue resolution.
- Assist with system security requests, change management activities, implementation planning, and post-implementation quality assurance.
- Support end-user communications and training related to system changes when appropriate.
- Maintain awareness of emerging technologies, tools, and methodologies and identify opportunities to apply them to business processes and systems.
Business Systems Analyst Qualifications
- 1+ year of experience in business systems analysis, business requirements gathering, process modeling, functional system design or configuration, acceptance testing, or a related discipline.
- Experience supporting a complex business function such as healthcare claims, enrollment/membership, provider operations, benefits administration, or another data-intensive business environment.
- Experience working throughout the SDLC, with a solid understanding of requirements analysis, functional design, configuration, testing, implementation, and production support.
- Experience with Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) files is strongly preferred, particularly 834 enrollment/disenrollment transactions.
- Strong SQL skills and experience using queries or scripts for data analysis, validation, troubleshooting, reporting, or data movement.
- Experience with functional, regression, integration, unit, or user acceptance testing, including documenting test scenarios, expected results, and outcomes.
- Ability to analyze data structures, data flows, interfaces, database concepts, and technical documentation to evaluate system solutions.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to investigate complex issues and identify practical solutions.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to translate between business requirements and technical concepts.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities, organize work effectively, and meet deadlines in a project-oriented environment.
- Comfortable working independently while also collaborating closely with business stakeholders, developers, QA professionals, and senior team members.
- Strong customer-service orientation and the ability to work effectively in an environment where requirements, priorities, and solutions may evolve.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Business Administration, Information Systems, or a related field is preferred. Equivalent relevant industry experience may be considered.
