Principal Portfolio Manager
Our client is seeking a Principal Portfolio Manager to provide strategic leadership and operational discipline across a complex enterprise technology portfolio. This role is ideal for an experienced portfolio leader who can bring clarity to ambiguity, connect strategy with investment and execution, and turn complex data and stakeholder input into actionable recommendations for senior leaders.

This role is a hybrid model in Beaverton, Oregon.

Principal Portfolio Manager Responsibilities

  • Lead and continuously improve portfolio planning and governance processes, including annual and quarterly planning, business reviews, forecasting, prioritization, and ongoing portfolio health discussions.
  • Develop clear, executive-ready insights that connect portfolio performance, investments, capacity, risks, dependencies, priorities, and business outcomes to support informed decision-making.
  • Partner across product, engineering, program, finance, business, and technology teams to align priorities, sequencing, resources, and expected outcomes across a highly matrixed environment.
  • Facilitate portfolio prioritization and scenario-planning discussions, identifying constraints, trade-offs, and opportunities to help leaders make strategic investment and resource decisions.
  • Establish and enhance portfolio intake and governance practices, including decision rights, ownership, evaluation criteria, workflows, and accountability across multiple teams and workstreams.
  • Design and manage continuous planning processes that create alignment from initial planning inputs and prioritization through leadership decisions, committed plans, execution, and follow-up.
  • Define and evolve portfolio KPIs, reporting practices, and performance measures that provide meaningful visibility into portfolio health and support proactive decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify portfolio practices, eliminate operational friction, strengthen accountability, and improve the speed and quality of cross-functional decisions.
  • Improve portfolio tooling, analytics, reporting, and data accessibility, leveraging automation and AI-enabled capabilities where appropriate to increase efficiency and consistency.
  • Serve as a strategic connection point between portfolio teams and broader enterprise technology stakeholders, ensuring organizational expectations are translated into practical operating practices.
  • Lead adoption of new or improved portfolio processes through effective facilitation, stakeholder engagement, communication, and change management.

Principal Portfolio Manager Qualifications

  • 8+ years of experience in technology portfolio management, strategic planning, technical program management, business operations, or a related discipline, including experience within large-scale enterprise environments.
  • Demonstrated success leading portfolio planning, prioritization, governance, executive reporting, and cross-functional decision-making processes.
  • Strong ability to connect business strategy with investments, capacity, delivery priorities, execution, and measurable outcomes.
  • Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills with experience interpreting financial, resource, delivery, risk, dependency, and performance data to develop actionable recommendations.
  • Exceptional executive communication skills with the ability to distill complex or ambiguous information into concise narratives, options, recommendations, and decision points.
  • Proven ability to influence and build alignment across product, engineering, program, finance, business, and technology stakeholders without direct authority.
  • Strong facilitation and change leadership capabilities, including experience improving portfolio practices and driving adoption across matrixed organizations.
  • Experience developing portfolio health metrics, KPIs, forecasting views, scenario analyses, and risk and dependency reporting.
  • Proficiency with portfolio planning, work management, reporting, collaboration, and presentation tools. Experience with platforms such as Jira, Confluence, Airtable, Smartsheet, and Microsoft Office is beneficial.
  • Experience applying automation, AI-enabled tools, or modern analytics capabilities to improve portfolio reporting, planning, or operational efficiency.
  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of relevant education, training, and professional experience.
  • Experience supporting supply chain, planning, retail, or other large-scale enterprise technology portfolios is preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively across organizational boundaries, geographies, cultures, and time zones.
