Lead SCADA Systems Architect (Gas Control Systems)
Our client is seeking a Lead SCADA Systems Architect to provide technical leadership and hands-on expertise for large-scale gas control and SCADA system implementations. This role will lead the end-to-end technical delivery of a modern SCADA platform, including architecture, configuration, integration, and migration activities. The ideal candidate is a self-directed technical leader who thrives in complex, client-facing environments, can navigate ambiguity, and partners effectively with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable, secure, and high-performing control systems. This role is primarily remote, with periodic onsite collaboration and travel required.
This role is onsite in Portland, Oregon.
Lead SCADA Systems Architect Responsibilities
- Lead the technical architecture and implementation of gas control and SCADA platforms, including system design, configuration, integrations, and legacy system replacement.
- Own technical delivery across the project lifecycle, ensuring solutions meet functional requirements, safety standards, performance expectations, and reliability goals.
- Design and document SCADA architectures, including redundancy, high availability, failover strategies, and disaster recovery considerations.
- Provide hands-on expertise with SCADA software, PLCs, HMIs, operational technology infrastructure, and real-time data systems.
- Collaborate closely with utility engineering, infrastructure, cybersecurity, enterprise architecture, and compliance teams to ensure alignment with operational and regulatory requirements.
- Lead technical planning activities, including scope definition, sequencing, risk identification, and mitigation strategies.
- Communicate technical concepts, progress, risks, and recommendations clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Guide and mentor distributed technical team members, including internal staff and system integrator partners.
- Support testing, validation, and end-user acceptance activities, including participation in site validation sessions.
- Produce project reporting artifacts such as technical documentation, status updates, incident reports, and implementation summaries.
Lead SCADA Systems Architect Qualifications
- Minimum of 3 years of experience delivering SCADA or instrumentation and control system implementation projects in utility, energy, or industrial environments.
- Strong hands-on experience with SCADA platforms, control systems architecture, and real-time operational data environments.
- Experience with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and CompactLogix, along with Rockwell FactoryTalk or comparable HMI solutions.
- Familiarity with operational technology environments, including virtualized servers, industrial networks, and system integrations.
- Experience working within structured delivery methodologies such as SDLC or hybrid waterfall approaches.
- Proven ability to lead technical workstreams in complex, cross-functional, and client-facing environments with limited day-to-day supervision.
- Experience coordinating distributed teams across multiple locations and working effectively with third-party system integrators.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to assess risk, make sound technical decisions, and escalate issues to maintain project momentum.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, and stakeholder management skills.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred:
- Experience supporting gas control or energy-sector SCADA environments.
- Familiarity with AspenTech or similar gas control room platforms.
- Knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as OPC, Modbus, or DNP3.
- Understanding of cybersecurity considerations and compliance standards for industrial control systems.
- Experience with scripting or automation tools such as Python or PowerShell.
- Exposure to cloud-based SCADA, IIoT, or edge computing architectures.
