Data Engineer
Our client is seeking an experienced Data Engineer to support a large-scale digital transformation initiative focused on modernizing enterprise data systems and strengthening data governance. This role is responsible for designing and maintaining secure, scalable data pipelines and cloud-based data platforms that enable reliable reporting, analytics, and informed decision-making across diverse stakeholders. The ideal candidate brings strong technical expertise, a collaborative mindset, and a commitment to building high-quality, trustworthy data solutions.
This role is onsite in Portland, Oregon.
Data Engineer Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable ELT/ETL pipelines within a Snowflake-based data environment sourcing from enterprise systems such as student information, HR, finance, and third-party platforms.
- Develop and manage Snowflake data models, schemas, transformations, tasks, and procedures to support analytics, reporting, and regulatory requirements.
- Implement and monitor data quality frameworks, automated validations, and observability practices to ensure data accuracy, completeness, and reliability.
- Collaborate with architects, analysts, developers, and business partners to translate functional requirements into scalable data engineering solutions.
- Optimize performance and cost efficiency through query tuning, warehouse configuration, and workload management.
- Build and support integrations using tools such as dbt, SQL, Python, APIs, and cloud-native services; monitor workflows and resolve pipeline issues.
- Ensure compliance with data governance standards, privacy requirements, and security controls including role-based access and metadata documentation.
- Contribute to enterprise data standards, best practices, and long-term data strategy initiatives.
- Troubleshoot complex data and system issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement sustainable solutions.
- Maintain awareness of emerging data engineering tools, Snowflake capabilities, and cloud data best practices through ongoing learning and development.
Data Engineer Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, data engineering, or a closely related field; advanced degrees are a plus.
- Three or more years of professional experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or cloud-based data platform development.
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake or a comparable enterprise data warehouse technology.
- Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with ELT/ETL concepts, data modeling, and transformation frameworks such as dbt.
- Experience working with Python, APIs, and workflow orchestration or integration tools.
- Familiarity with cloud environments (AWS and/or Azure) and modern data engineering toolchains.
- Working knowledge of data governance, access controls, metadata management, and data privacy principles.
- Ability to communicate technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and maintain confidentiality.
- Experience supporting public-sector, education, or similarly regulated environments is preferred but not required.
