Firmware Quality Engineer (SDET)
Our client is seeking a Firmware Quality Engineer (SDET) to play a key role in advancing the quality, reliability, and performance of an innovative connected hardware platform. This opportunity is ideal for an experienced quality engineering professional who enjoys building scalable automation frameworks, solving complex technical challenges, and partnering with cross-functional engineering teams in a fast-paced, startup-style environment. The ideal candidate is a proactive problem solver with a passion for embedded systems, automation, and continuous improvement.
This role is on-site in Beaverton, Oregon.
Firmware Quality Engineer (SDET) Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain automated test frameworks, validation tools, and quality pipelines for embedded firmware and connected hardware systems.
- Build and enhance Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and system-level testing environments to improve product reliability and release confidence.
- Create automated regression testing solutions for firmware, controls, and hardware/software interactions across connected devices.
- Investigate complex firmware and hardware issues through debugging, log analysis, telemetry, and root cause analysis while partnering with engineering teams to implement lasting solutions.
- Establish quality metrics, release readiness criteria, and scalable validation processes that support efficient product development and future platform growth.
- Develop internal tools that improve testing efficiency, diagnostics, observability, and engineering productivity.
- Collaborate closely with firmware, software, hardware, product, and quality teams to integrate quality throughout the development lifecycle.
- Evaluate system performance, identify opportunities for process improvements, and provide both quantitative and qualitative insights to enhance product quality.
- Support testing of robotics, mechatronics, wearable, or other connected hardware systems while validating hardware and firmware interactions.
- Produce clear technical documentation, validation plans, test reports, and quality documentation to support engineering and release activities.
Firmware Quality Engineer (SDET) Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of experience as a Firmware Quality Engineer, SDET, Embedded Software Engineer, or in a similar quality engineering role.
- Proven experience building automated testing frameworks, quality pipelines, and CI/CD processes for embedded or firmware-based products.
- Strong programming experience with Python and developing production-quality automation tools.
- Experience validating robotics, mechatronics, wearables, connected devices, industrial automation products, or similar embedded systems.
- Hands-on experience with firmware debugging, hardware system testing, and troubleshooting complex technical issues.
- Strong understanding of firmware development workflows, version control, release processes, and software quality best practices.
- Experience developing quality metrics, validation strategies, test plans, and release qualification processes.
- Familiarity with Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) testing, embedded diagnostics, or hardware debugging tools is highly preferred.
- Experience with CI/CD platforms such as GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar automation technologies is preferred.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and documentation skills with the ability to thrive in a highly collaborative, startup-style environment.
- Self-motivated, adaptable, and capable of building scalable processes in environments with evolving requirements.
Compensation: Up to $56.67/hr. (DOE)
