PLC Controls Engineer
Our client is seeking a PLC Controls Engineer to support and enhance automated manufacturing systems within a high-volume production environment. This role focuses on PLC programming, controls optimization, equipment integration, and plant-wide reliability improvements. The ideal candidate is hands-on, solutions-driven, and comfortable working closely with maintenance, operations, and external equipment partners.
This role is onsite in Halifax, North Carolina.
PLC Controls Engineer Responsibilities
- Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain complex PLC-controlled equipment and associated control systems to ensure consistent production performance.
- Modify, develop, and optimize PLC programs to improve machine efficiency, reliability, and process stability.
- Design, assemble, and update control panels or cabinets for new and existing manufacturing equipment.
- Collaborate with equipment vendors, plant maintenance, and operations teams on system improvements, upgrades, and automation initiatives.
- Support controls migrations, enhancements, and standardization efforts across plant systems and platforms.
- Develop diagnostic routines, alarms, and fault-detection logic to streamline future troubleshooting and reduce downtime.
- Establish and maintain controls best practices, including system access, backups, and recovery procedures.
- Work with plant technology and IT resources to maintain networked production systems and connected devices.
- Provide technical guidance and knowledge transfer to maintenance personnel on controls and electronic systems.
- Contribute to continuous improvement efforts and other assigned engineering or automation projects.
PLC Controls Engineer Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related technical field, or an equivalent combination of education and practical experience.
- Proven experience maintaining and troubleshooting PLC systems in a manufacturing or industrial setting.
- Strong background working with Rockwell / Allen-Bradley automation platforms and related software tools.
- Demonstrated ability to diagnose and resolve advanced controls, instrumentation, and process-related issues.
- Solid understanding of machine automation, interlocks, ladder logic, relay logic, and safety-oriented controls design.
- Experience working with drives, motion systems, and industrial communication protocols.
- Ability to interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and process drawings.
- Working knowledge of Ethernet-based industrial networks.
- Familiarity with CAD tools for basic controls or electrical design work.
- Proficiency with common business and engineering software tools.
- Strong collaboration, problem-solving, and communication skills.
