Case Manager – Absence Management (Part-Time)
Our client is seeking a compassionate and detail-oriented Case Manager – Absence Management to provide hands-on support for employees navigating leaves of absence, workplace injuries, disability events, and return-to-work processes. The ideal candidate combines strong knowledge of absence management regulations with excellent communication, organization, and problem-solving skills and can independently manage sensitive cases while partnering effectively across HR and business teams.

This is a remote role available to those residing within a 2-hour commute to Boston, Massachusetts working around 20 hours per week.

Case Manager Responsibilities

  • Manage an assigned caseload involving leaves of absence, disability, workplace injuries, accommodations, and return-to-work matters while maintaining accurate and confidential documentation.
  • Guide employees and managers through leave and absence processes, answering questions, communicating status updates, explaining requirements, and helping resolve issues throughout the duration of a case.
  • Coordinate with third-party administrators and internal partners, including HR, Benefits, Payroll, Safety, Legal, and management, to support timely case resolution, accurate pay, and regulatory compliance.
  • Support the administration of federal, state, and company-sponsored leave programs, including eligibility verification, approvals, notifications, documentation, time-entry updates, and wage-replacement coordination.
  • Provide administrative and case support for Workers’ Compensation matters, including gathering medical documentation, assisting injured employees, monitoring claims, and identifying concerns requiring escalation.
  • Maintain accurate absence, injury, and modified-duty records within applicable HR and timekeeping systems and prepare recurring reports to identify trends, patterns, and outstanding cases.
  • Partner with managers to support employees before, during, and after an absence, including education regarding leave procedures, timekeeping requirements, accommodations, and return-to-work considerations.
  • Review individual cases regularly, adjust case management plans as employee circumstances change, and proactively address barriers that could delay leave administration or return to work.
  • Participate in leave and Workers’ Compensation claim reviews, audits, and cross-functional meetings and compile relevant information for discussion with internal stakeholders and external administrators.
  • Maintain a high level of discretion, organization, responsiveness, and customer service while balancing multiple priorities and handling sensitive employee information.
  • Ensure leave and absence practices align with applicable federal and state regulations, organizational policies, and established procedures.
  • Provide additional absence management and administrative support as needed, with flexibility to work occasional nights or weekends based on business needs.

Case Manager Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
  • Minimum of two years of relevant experience in absence management, leave administration, Human Resources, Workers’ Compensation, disability management, benefits, or a related area.
  • Working knowledge of federal and state leave and workplace accommodation requirements, including FMLA and ADA regulations, with an understanding of occupational and non-occupational absences.
  • Experience with Paid Family and Medical Leave programs, state-specific statutory leave requirements, Workers’ Compensation, and/or disability programs is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to interpret leave policies and regulatory requirements and apply them appropriately to individual employee circumstances.
  • Strong case management, analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple cases and priorities independently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to explain complex leave processes clearly and compassionately to employees, managers, and business partners.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills, including empathy, patience, sound judgment, discretion, and professionalism when handling sensitive employee situations.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, spreadsheets, reporting, and data entry; experience with Kronos and Workday is preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with third-party administrators and cross-functional teams while adapting to changing case needs and business priorities.
  • HR or benefits-related professional certification, such as PHR, SPHR, or CCP, is preferred.

Compensation: $30+/hr. (DOE)
