Data Governance Manager
Our client is seeking an experienced Data Governance Manager to lead the development, implementation, and adoption of an enterprise-wide data governance program supporting a significant digital transformation and ERP modernization initiative. This full-time contract role is ideal for a strategic, collaborative leader who can translate data governance principles into practical processes, establish accountability across business and technology teams, and build a sustainable governance capability that can be transitioned to internal staff.
This role is on-site in Portland, Oregon.
Data Governance Manager Responsibilities
- Lead the implementation and ongoing maturation of an enterprise data governance framework, including standards and processes for data ownership, stewardship, quality, access, lifecycle management, privacy, and security.
- Establish and operationalize Data Owner and Data Steward roles across business domains, facilitating governance groups and cross-functional decision-making between business and technology stakeholders.
- Develop governance processes for enterprise master data, including approval workflows, data changes, metadata management, issue escalation, golden record management, and survivorship rules across ERP, enterprise data platforms, reporting environments, and downstream systems.
- Lead the development and maintenance of an enterprise business glossary, data dictionary, critical data element inventory, metadata, and data lineage practices.
- Establish repeatable processes for identifying, prioritizing, assigning, tracking, and resolving data quality issues in partnership with business owners, analysts, and technical teams.
- Facilitate workshops and stakeholder sessions to define data domains, standards, ownership models, critical data elements, governance requirements, and measures of success.
- Partner with functional teams, IT, and external vendors to promote consistent data definitions, integration standards, governance practices, and appropriate use of enterprise information.
- Manage the data governance workstream, including deliverables, schedules, risks, dependencies, performance metrics, recommendations, and reporting to program leadership and governance groups.
- Support organizational change management through stakeholder communication, training, documentation, and adoption activities related to new data governance roles, processes, and tools.
- Develop sustainable governance practices, documentation, and knowledge-transfer materials to ensure internal teams can maintain the program following completion of the transformation initiative.
Data Governance Manager Qualifications
- Five or more years of experience leading data governance, enterprise data management, and organizational change initiatives within a complex organization.
- Demonstrated experience implementing cloud-based data lake or lakehouse solutions using technologies such as Snowflake, Azure Synapse, AWS Redshift, Databricks, Amorphic, or comparable platforms.
- Strong knowledge of data governance frameworks and practices, including master data management, metadata management, data quality, data lineage, enterprise data architecture, and golden record governance.
- Experience supporting ERP modernization, enterprise system integrations, and governance across multiple business and technology domains.
- Proven ability to establish data ownership and stewardship models, facilitate cross-functional governance, build consensus, and translate enterprise strategy into actionable processes and standards.
- Strong program and project management capabilities, including experience managing multiple workstreams, timelines, risks, vendors, deliverables, and governance reporting.
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to explain complex data concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders and navigate competing organizational priorities.
- Knowledge of applicable data privacy, security, and regulatory requirements, with the ability to exercise discretion and sound judgment when working with sensitive information.
- Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Data Science, Business Administration, or a related discipline, or an equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
- Advanced education or relevant data governance certifications, such as CDMP or DGSP, are preferred; experience supporting large-scale ERP modernization or enterprise transformation initiatives is a plus.
