IT Systems Engineer III
Our client is seeking an experienced IT Systems Engineer III to serve as a senior technical resource within a complex enterprise infrastructure environment. This individual will play a critical role in designing, engineering, automating, and supporting highly available systems across hybrid cloud and on-premise platforms. The ideal candidate brings deep infrastructure expertise, strong analytical capabilities, and a commitment to scalable, standards-driven architecture.

This role is a hybrid model in Portland, Oregon.

IT Systems Engineer III Responsibilities

• Provide advanced (L3) escalation support for complex infrastructure incidents and service requests, ensuring timely resolution and system stability.
• Design, engineer, and maintain enterprise IT systems supporting application delivery, including servers, networking components, load balancers, firewalls, DNS/DHCP, authentication, certificates, service accounts, and public/private access pathways.
• Deploy, administer, and optimize Linux and Microsoft server environments across on-premise and cloud platforms.
• Architect and support AWS core services, including EC2, VPC, S3, RDS, load balancing, and web application firewall configurations.
• Implement and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions using tools such as Terraform and Ansible to enable repeatable, scalable deployments.
• Develop, enhance, and troubleshoot automation scripts using PowerShell and/or Python to improve operational efficiency and reduce manual effort.
• Monitor infrastructure health, oversee escalated ServiceNow work queues, and proactively identify patterns impacting system performance and reliability.
• Create and maintain technical documentation, architectural diagrams, runbooks, workflows, and operating standards using tools such as Word, Excel, and Visio.
• Apply standardized architecture models, governance frameworks, and repeatable processes to ensure consistent, compliant infrastructure design.
• Collaborate cross-functionally as a trusted technical advisor, contributing to strategic infrastructure planning and continuous improvement initiatives.

IT Systems Engineer III Qualifications

• 7+ years of progressive experience supporting enterprise infrastructure environments, including hybrid cloud and on-premise systems.
• Strong expertise administering Linux and Microsoft Windows Server platforms.
• Hands-on experience designing and supporting AWS environments and core services.
• Proven experience implementing Infrastructure as Code using tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or similar automation frameworks.
• Advanced troubleshooting skills with experience serving as an escalation point for complex break/fix scenarios.
• Proficiency in scripting and automation using PowerShell and/or Python.
• Experience utilizing source control systems (e.g., Git-based platforms) and adhering to version control best practices.
• Solid understanding of networking fundamentals, security principles, and enterprise application delivery components.
• Experience documenting technical standards, workflows, and architecture diagrams in a structured enterprise environment.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across technical and business stakeholders.

Compensation: $65-$70/hr. (DOE)
