Field Engineer – Automation and Controls
Our client is seeking a Field Engineer – Automation and Controls to support the design, implementation, and ongoing operation of industrial automation and control systems within complex utility and treatment environments. This role partners closely with operations and engineering teams to ensure reliable, secure, and compliant process control systems across facility and remote infrastructure.
This role is onsite in Hillsboro, Oregon.
Field Engineer Responsibilities
- Design, configure, support, and maintain automation and control systems used for real-time monitoring, reporting, and control of industrial treatment and pumping operations.
- Ensure the reliability and integrity of SCADA, PLC, DCS, and remote telemetry systems, including alarm management, system modifications, upgrades, and documentation.
- Develop, test, commission, and support automation solutions during construction, startup, and operational phases of facility and infrastructure projects.
- Maintain and support process control data historians and reporting platforms to meet operational, maintenance, and regulatory requirements.
- Troubleshoot and resolve automation-related hardware, software, and network issues, including component repair or replacement as needed.
- Implement best practices for system security, disaster recovery, and redundancy to support continuous 24/7 operations.
- Provide technical guidance, training, and hands-on support to operations and maintenance staff related to automation hardware and software.
- Collaborate with senior engineering staff and cross-functional teams to define automation goals, prioritize projects, and standardize control strategies.
- Support evaluation and testing of emerging technologies to improve system performance, efficiency, and scalability.
- Travel locally to facilities and project sites as required, including operating a company or personal vehicle for work purposes.
Field Engineer Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience with industrial automation platforms, including SCADA, PLCs, DCS, and related control systems.
- Strong working knowledge of industrial communication protocols such as Modbus, OPC, Ethernet/IP, PROFIBUS, and remote I/O.
- Experience programming and supporting PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley and/or Siemens, using industry-standard tools.
- Proficiency with SCADA and HMI software platforms such as iFIX, Wonderware, or similar systems.
- Solid understanding of industrial networking concepts, including Ethernet, TCP/IP, wireless communication, and Fieldbus networks.
- Experience applying process control methodologies, instrumentation, and control theory within industrial or treatment environments.
- Ability to interpret P&IDs, technical specifications, drawings, and system documentation.
- Experience working with relational databases such as Oracle or SQL Server in support of control systems or reporting.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills with the ability to respond effectively to system issues.
- Effective communication skills and the ability to collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in industrial automation, process control systems design, or related technical work.
- College coursework or equivalent professional training in computer science, programming, industrial controls, instrumentation, or a related field.
- Valid state-issued driver’s license, maintained throughout employment.
Salary: $47.50-$65.32/hr. (DOE)
