Data Engineer
Our client is seeking a Data Engineer to play a key role in the early-stage buildout of a modern enterprise data platform. This position supports a broader digital transformation initiative focused on implementing Snowflake, strengthening data governance, and enabling reliable analytics across the organization. The ideal candidate is technically strong, adaptable, and excited to help shape foundational data capabilities in a collaborative, cross-functional environment.
This role is onsite in Portland, Oregon.
Data Engineer Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain scalable ELT/ETL pipelines within a newly implemented Snowflake data platform, sourcing from enterprise systems such as HR, finance, ERP, and third-party applications.
- Develop and manage Snowflake data structures, transformations, tasks, and procedures to support analytics, reporting, and operational use cases.
- Support data movement and integration during an ERP transition, including migrating and reconciling data between legacy systems (e.g., PeopleSoft) and future platforms.
- Partner closely with enterprise applications, integrations, data architecture, data governance, and analytics teams to translate requirements into durable data solutions.
- Implement data quality checks, validation processes, and monitoring to ensure accuracy, reliability, and trust in enterprise data assets.
- Optimize performance and cost efficiency through SQL tuning, warehouse sizing, and workload management.
- Build and support integrations using SQL, Python, APIs, dbt, and cloud-native services; troubleshoot pipeline and system issues as they arise.
- Apply data governance, security, and privacy standards, including role-based access controls, metadata documentation, and audit support.
- Contribute to the establishment of data engineering standards, best practices, and long-term platform strategy.
- Stay current on Snowflake features, cloud data tools, and emerging best practices to continuously improve the data ecosystem.
Data Engineer Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or a related field is preferred; equivalent professional experience will be considered.
- 3 or more years of experience in data engineering, data warehousing, or cloud-based data platform development.
- Hands-on experience with Snowflake or comparable enterprise data warehouse technologies.
- Strong SQL expertise, including experience with Transact-SQL (T-SQL) and familiarity with ANSI SQL and analytic extensions.
- Experience supporting ELT/ETL pipelines, data modeling, and transformation frameworks such as dbt.
- Working knowledge of Python, APIs, and integration or orchestration tools.
- Experience working in cloud environments, with AWS strongly preferred; familiarity with Azure Active Directory is a plus.
- Exposure to ERP systems and enterprise data migration efforts; prior PeopleSoft experience is advantageous but not required.
- Understanding of data governance concepts, access controls, metadata management, and data privacy practices.
- Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and handle sensitive information with discretion.
- Experience in regulated, public-sector, education, or similarly complex environments is beneficial but not required.
