Data Engineering Manager
The Data Engineering Manager leads and mentors a diverse group of data professionals who administer and maintain Development and Production data sets and drive our long-term strategy for data storage and operation. This position works with both Product Development and Product Operations to provide strategic and tactical guidance for the Database Administrator team (DBAs) and Operations Engineering. These teams support data structures in all development, test and production environments, ensuring availability, reliability, security, scalability, backup, recovery and performance of various data types. Some members of the Data Engineering team provide 24x7 on-call support for Production platforms, and the team is composed of a mixture of on-site and remote staff.
Data Engineering Manager Responsibilities
Recruits, interviews, hires, and trains new staff.
Oversees daily workflow of Data Engineering teams.
Creates and maintains development plans for Data Engineering teams, ensuring alignment to roadmap activity and strategic initiatives.
Provides constructive and timely performance evaluations, handling discipline and termination of employees as needed in accordance with company policy.
Identifies, develops, establishes and maintains all data-related standards, processes and procedures, ensuring they are aligned to Operations, Development, Security and Architecture guidelines.
Works with Reliability Team, to assess current and projected database performance and recommends changes/enhancements.
Ensures integrity of database system by developing, documenting, and enforcing security procedures and access controls in cooperation with Information Security and Architecture teams.
Ensures project and department milestones and goals are met on time and within budget.
Acts as a point of escalation and resolution for data-related issues.
Maintains knowledge of trends, developments, and best practices in database, security and related technology.
Performs other duties as assigned to ensure the success of the team and the entire organization.
Data Engineering Manager Qualifications
Minimum bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, IT Systems Management or related field; equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered in lieu of a degree.
Previous Technology Management experience is required.
Experience working in an Agile/Scrum environment is desired.
Experience with the following is highly desirable: AWS Management (particularly DynamoDB and RDS), Puppet, New Relic, Python, Atlassian Tool Suite (JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket).
Demonstrated analytical abilities, diagnostic skills and technical aptitude.
Skills and Abilities:
Working knowledge of MongoDB, PostgreSQL or other comparable RDBMS and NoSQL database technologies.
Working experience with AWS database technologies, especially DynamoDB and RDS.
Strong experience with transition management and staff development.
Ability to communicate ideas and designs to all stakeholders, including non-technical audiences.
Thorough understanding of file structures and design, information retrieval techniques, file access methods, and database controls and standard.
