Description

Job ID: 40845

Cloud Infrastructure Architect / Engineer
As the lead infrastructure engineer on our client’s growing startup team, you’ll be responsible for operations, infrastructure, security, and scalability for the company’s suite of learning technology. You’ll work with the engineering team to create processes and pipelines that support continuous integration and deployment. You’ll enable the entire team to be more experimental and take more risks because our infrastructure will be fault-tolerant, resilient, and secure.

You’ll work closely with the product team to make decisions driven by user research and successful outcomes. Your ability to prioritize and to communicate will be essential. Your ability to learn new skills and explore new technologies will enable you to lead the engineering team to deliver unprecedented learning experiences to all. Like any great infrastructure role, you’ll be guided by principles and values, but every day’s work will be different.

Cloud Infrastructure Architect / Engineer Responsibilities
Managing and scaling our existing cloud infrastructure, primarily AWS with a few one-offs. Existing systems will have to scale to meet growing demand with minimal rework of applications.
Collaborate with developers to implement a containerization strategy for ongoing and future work. This will include implementing pipelines, managing Docker, and orchestrating containers.
Implement security improvements in infrastructure that enhance our security posture and raise our security technology to the level of being a competitive advantage.
Improve our monitoring systems and process to reduce occurrence, cost, and impact of production issues.
Manage infrastructure costs, and identify opportunities for cost savings, especially as we scale.
Anticipate technology developments that can help us scale and create and implement plans to help us take advantage of technologies as they achieve adoption.
Help grow our culture of learning and experimentation by teaching other team members about your technology choices and preferences, in informal settings as well as meetings.
Engage in code reviews and pair with developers to help ensure that new development is compatible with infrastructure strategy.
Assist with day-to-day support issues and be available to address escalations.

Cloud Infrastructure Architect / Engineer Qualifications
You’re experienced at building, operating, and scaling Amazon Web Services that serve hundreds of thousands of users, and have strong opinions about which services are best for given applications.
You’ve worked closely with software developers to create and operate continuous integration and delivery pipelines, using TravisCI, Circle, Jenkins, or similar services.
You enjoy automating all the things and have strong opinions about what should be automated and how it should be done.
You’re able to write a little code. You can write scripts and can read code in a few different languages.
You love implementing monitoring and alerting processes that help your whole team sleep better at night, knowing that most problems will be caught before causing outages.
You know that making important security choices is critical to protecting our students and our business and are familiar with vulnerabilities at all levels of the stack.
You’re not afraid to take risks that make our technology better, knowing that you’ve set up redundant systems and rollback processes that make it safe to experiment. You’re not afraid to fail and know that failure is essential to learning and growth.
You’ve done great work recently and have 2 or 3 string references who love to talk about how you’ve helped them.

Preferred:
Agile management or Scrum experience (certification not needed).
You have experience with the Higher Education community.
You’ve shipped Software as a Service (SaaS) solutions.
You’ve run your own usability studies.
Experience with designing for digital and print media.
Experience with inclusive design.
