Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages

Details:

* Presenter: Prof. Simon Thompson
* Date: Thursday, April 1, 2010
* Time: 10:30am

Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). In doing this we will address system design, the pragmatics of system take-up, as well as contrasting the style of refactoring and tooling for Haskell and Erlang.

Bio: Simon Thompson is a Professor of Logic and Computation at the University of Kent.

  2600 Seattle Monthly Meeting
2600 Seattle Monthly Meeting
Monthly at 6pm-9pm on the first Friday

Washington State Convention & Trade Center

Created ByRoy for SeattleTechCalendar
Descrwww.wa2600.org

Washington State Convention & Trade Center
800 Convention Place
Seattle, WA - 98101 (see map)

2600 meetings are held the first Friday of every month at the Washington State Convention and Trade Center, which has excellent transportation connections from the greater Puget Sound area.

2600 Meetings exist as a forum for all interested in technology to meet and talk about events in technology-land, learn, and teach. Meetings are open to anyone of any age or level of expertise.

All meetings take place on the first Friday of every month. Most people begin to show up around 6pm. We now meet on the second floor, at the tables behind the escalators.

The Seattle meeting is one of the longest-running and most well-established 2600 meetings in the country, with an average turnout of more than twenty attendees. Most people begin to show up around 6pm. We now meet on the second floor, at the tables behind the escalators.

It's a common misconception that 2600 meetings involve lawlessness and mayhem. If these are your interests, you will not only be disappointed, but will probably be banned from the meeting by the Convention Center's Security Team. Conversely, if you are the kind of person who takes things apart to learn how they work, you delight in discovering how things operate "behind the scenes," and you question not just "how" but also "why," you're a hacker--even if you don't do anything illegal! At the Seattle 2600 meeting, unlike almost anywhere else, you won't be considered weird or dangerous for being who you are. Instead, you'll discover that you're not alone, you'll learn new things, and--most importantly--you'll have a lot of fun!

Most hackers aren't what you have heard or read about in the popular media. We have a passion for technology, a driving curiosity, and a strong belief in changing the world. In our experience, these attributes aren't learned; they're a gift. Don't worry if you're new to technology; while technologies shift constantly, the hacker spirit endures. Our community has a broad range of backgrounds, interests, and walks of life. While we are sometimes willing to bend the rules in order to learn new things, real hackers aren't inclined to deface Web pages and empty bank accounts (even though many know how to do so). While it does not make for exciting news, hackers are--as a whole--much more likely to void the warranty on a piece of equipment by taking it apart.

Description
The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN), Software Association of Oregon (SAO) , Oregon Business Association (OBA) and the Portland Business Alliance are presenting the 2010 Gubernatorial Candidate Forums. Tech America will be a supporting organization for the forums

Oregon’s economy is facing great challenges. The state is struggling with serious budgetary shortfalls and that is exacerbated by an unemployment rate that is hovering above 10 percent. With the recent passage of measures 66 & 67 many Oregonians question what the impact will be for Oregon businesses. Policies that support and encourage business growth and economic development are a top-of-mind priority for many Oregonians. These candidate forums are intended to provide an opportunity for members of the business community to ask the candidates from each party what they would do to help support business and economic growth in Oregon.

The Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Wednesday, April 7 at Portland General Electric’s auditorium located at 121 SW Salmon St, 2WTC in Portland. It will feature Democratic candidates Bill Bradbury (www.bradburyfororegon.com) and John Kitzhaber, (www.johnkitzhaber.com).

The Republican Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Tuesday, April 27 at the Multnomah Athletic Club 1849 SW Salmon St. in Portland. It will feature Republican candidates Allen Alley (www.allenalley.com) and Chris Dudley (www.chrisdudley.com).

Tickets are required for onsite attendees and individual live stream access. Registration is recommended for satellite venues.

The gubernatorial candidate forum will be held prior to the primaries and will be moderated by Laural Porter of KGW News (twitter.com/lauralkgw). Check-in begins at 4:00PM. The program will begin at 4:30 PM and will run to 6:00 PM. Tickets are $20 for members of presenting or supporting organizations and $40 for non-members. We encourage attendees to pre-register online using the link below.

The forums will be streamed live over the web. Individual web stream tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance, but business community members outside of the Portland area may attend a satellite event in their local area at no charge.

The next Open Source Bridge volunteer sprint will be this Saturday, April 10th at the Market Street Pub. We’ll be there from 11am till 5pm, but you can come to as much of it as you’d like. Add this event to your calendar.

Some things we need your help with:

* Audio: We need to process last year’s audio from our sessions and be ready to quickly process this upcoming year’s audio. It would be great if you could download the 2009 event’s audio, familiarize yourself with it, think about how to clean it up so it can be posted, and bring it along with your computer to the sprint.

* Wiki: We want to provide useful information to our attendees and offer structure to help them organize and contribute information through our wiki. There is a lot of useful content on our 2009 wiki that can be used as inspiration for content to add to the 2010 wiki.

* OpenConferenceWare: We have a few branches containing valuable contributions to our open source conference software that we’d like to finish reviewing and testing so we can incorporate them, including security improvements, performance fixes and software upgrades.

* Complimentary ticket issuer: We’d like to make it easier for our volunteer staff to be able to issue complimentary tickets to speakers, raffle winners, and volunteers. We have developed a plan (PDF) for doing this, and need to start development.

* Hacker lounge planning: We have a 24-hour on-site “hacker lounge” this year for attendees to collaborate and hang out at. We need to discuss how to organize events in this room to provide just enough structure to help attendees without stifling their creativity.

* Logistics, venue and activity planning: We’re using the beautiful Portland Art Museum Mark Building as our venue this year. Discuss how to make the best use of this space and incorporate fun activities ranging from mobile donut trucks to on-site massages with our logistics crew.

* Or whatever you think would be helpful.

Thanks and see you at the sprint!

WHO: Corrina Black
Corrina Black grew up sketching pictures and cartoons, but didn’t turn to design until she discovered the Web and taught herself to design and code simple websites. She focused instinctively on user flow, interaction, and attractive solutions. Corrina is currently a UX Designer on the Microsoft Developer Division team. To broaden her impact, Corrina pursued a software engineering degree to combine with her passion for user experience design. For Corrina, user experience is what matters. A product that doesn’t solve a problem, is difficult to use, and doesn’t draw the user in, regardless of how amazing the technology, will fail.

TOPIC: Creating Great UX with Expression Blend
Corrina will do an intro to Blend and walkthrough the process of creating a great user experience; this will involve SketchFlow because detailing and iterating on user flow, layout, and animations and transitions prior to full-scale implementation is key to great UX design and this is done in tools like SketchFlow. She will also likely walkthrough the process of building a simple application in Blend to show the core functionality of Blend (maybe create a phone application).

Warmup - The Reactive Framework (Rx) in Silverlight
At the beginning of the meeting (6pm) our own Eric Sterling of Vertigo will be giving a short introduction to Rx. Have you had trouble writing asynchronous code (including unit testing code)? If so, Rx offers a compelling and syntactically attractive way of handling events.

Description
Failure isn’t always a bad thing as long as you learn from it. SplashCast, launched in 2007, was originally founded around the notion of helping consumers put together videos, text, graphics and music embedded in broadcast "channels." Despite raising over $4 million in funding, SplashCast was unable to survive and closed its doors in 2009.

Please join OEN for the April 14th PubTalk to hear what happened, and what the team learned from failure. You will hear from one of the Founders of SplashCast, as well as a few investors in the company. This panel discussion will highlight the positive moves the company made, as well as share some valuable lessons of what to avoid. Learning from their insights and knowledge will undoubtedly help you in your decision making processes so that your company may avoid the same pitfalls.

Speakers: Tom Turnbull; Investors: Angela Jackson and Jon Karl; Moderator: Dave deFiebre

Tom Turnbull
Tom Turnbull is a lawyer and entrepreneur. He has worked in business development, product, and legal roles at three venture backed startups. Of the three startups, one was a success (Internet Brands, Inc. NASDAQ: INET), one a soft landing (BizBuyer.com), and the last a sad ending (SplashCast Media). Tom also headed up new media strategy and business development for the LA Times and business development for Knowledge Learning Corporation. Additionally, he was a consulting manager at Andersen and a transactional lawyer. He received a law degree from the University of Washington and an M.B.A. from New York University with an emphasis in finance and entrepreneurial studies.

Jon Karl
Jon is an experienced entrepreneur who co-founded two Portland companies, ieLogic and iovation. As Vice President of Corporate Development for iovation, Jon plays a role in defining the company's business strategy, and is responsible for the creation of strategic partnerships, technology alliances and mergers or acquisitions. At ieLogic, Jon was instrumental in creating and driving the company brand and technology innovation that led to the company's successful sale in just five years.

An expert in the areas of Internet security and fraud management, Jon is a frequent speaker at industry trade shows, where he speaks on various topics including online fraud management, online privacy, and emerging technologies that protect online environments against fraud and abuse.

Jon holds a B.S. in Economics from Oregon State University, and has been an active investor over the last 5 years in a diverse range of start-up ventures. He lives in Tualatin with his wife, two boys, a dozen chickens and a dog.

Our focus is to help practitioners or potential practitioners of social projects push beyond discussion and debate into action. Each Forum will inspire and teach with ideas, powerful role models, and stories. Speakers, content experts, panels, and workshops will help you improve your strategies for planning and launching effective social ventures. The Forum will create a context to connect, learn, and take action around ideas that lead to tangible change—all in a venue designed for building community. The Forum is intended to attract people with a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but with a common interest—making a difference. If you are getting tired of waiting for someone else to step up to take on issues you care about, come see how this can be a place to make a difference, here or around the world. We invite people from both the business and non-profit community—investors and activists—to join in, work together, and make this a model for other cities to adopt. In today’s business environment, Information Technology (IT) is not an option. The outsourcing of IT infrastructure is quickly becoming a critical decision for many businesses that are challenged to reduce costs, while maintaining their competitive advantage and planning for the future.

Companies such as Amazon, Google and Microsoft are building massive data centers to provide for the needs of most businesses. While some of this is work in progress, today there are already many choices available to outsource your IT infrastructure.

This course will give you the most practical, vendor-neutral perspective to make decisions on what is right for your business now and in terms of future choices for hosting your computing infrastructure externally.

Did you know that "Portland, Or", a Facebook Fan page has 38,571 fans? That means there are at least 38,571 people in Portland on Facebook, and many more in the rest of Oregon and Vancouver, WA.

How would it affect your business to have that many more potential clients?

Taylor Ellwood of Imagine Your Reality Business and Social Media Coaching is holding a 3-hour live hands on Facebook Fanpage class.

3-hour hands on workshop. April 20th 2010, Portland, 2-5 pm. $89.95

* How to develop closer relationships with your fans and get your posts in the top news feed.
* How to create customized Facebook fan page tabs to promote your services.
* How to get more clients in your door and generate more sales for your business.

Event Description.Presented by the Phoenix Forum

These forums will feature a company that has re-emerged from economic hardship both stronger and with a strategy for continuing growth, three individual stories of technology professionals who turned their professional adversity into opportunity, or stories of local companies that soundly weathered the economic storm and are on the lookout for strategic talent to support its ongoing success.

From this our audience will discover:

* Strategies for business growth in this recession.
* A community of innovative technology professionals.
* Strong companies looking for top talent.

We can't pretend that the worst of the recession is behind us, but we can recognize the ingenuity and fortitude of Portland's tech professionals. We hope you'll join us to tell your story, listen and support your community. There will be three Forums throughout January, February and March, followed by a capstone event in the Spring where we'll celebrate the most compelling stories we've heard.

The Southwest Washington Workforce Development Council (SWWDC) is partnering with the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN) to bring a vital connection with the world of entrepreneurship to Southwest WA. We are leveraging the network and expertise of OEN to support innovation and growth.

OEN entrepreneurs tell good stories. They have to if they want their business to succeed. They also need access to information, contacts and capital. The OEN PubTalk™ is a great starting place for entrepreneurs to find just that.

OEN's PubTalk™, held the second Wednesday of every month (except July and December), is a unique mix of educational panel discussions delivered by successful entrepreneurs, investors or business experts combined with opportunities for entrepreneurs to gain expertise in delivering investment pitches. Entrepreneurs can present as a featured company at a monthly PubTalk or they can compete in OEN's Seed Oregon PubTalk™ competition.

During the monthly PubTalk's™, OEN selects two emerging entrepreneurs to present their five-minute pitch on who they are, and what they do in front of a live audience of experienced entrepreneurs. Presenting Northwest business entrepreneurs receive feedback on their products, services, business model, marketing strategy, or other integral component of their business. The objective is to leverage the strength and experience of the community, providing an invaluable learning opportunity for young entrepreneurs.

Are you writing for the internet?
Whether you are writing website copy or blog postings, your goal is to resonate with an invisible audience.

Write it Rich! Real-World Writing Tips for Reluctant Writers is a fast-paced workshop covers:

* How to organize your thoughts and pick a key message
* Ingredients for memorable online content (both written and video)
* Tips and tricks to capture your target market’s attention *Q & A – strongly encouraged!

Susan Rich has earned a degree in journalism…which led to a career writing for newspapers and magazines. Along the way she joined several major companies, including Boeing and Tektronix. She learned how airplanes fly (and why they crash), and what goes on inside a logic analyzer (it isn’t logical if you’re not an engineer). To that end, Susan managed PR and marketing campaigns, developed materials for product launches, and fought the good fight with Excel. She lost — which only goes to show that she writse better than she can build a spreadsheet. After two decades in the corporate sector, Susan left in 2004 to start her own business… Welcome Susan!

The transition is exciting and challenging as Product Managers try to fit their function into an engineering-focused process instead of a market-focused process. Some research suggests that when Product Mangers become Product Owners, their workload increases 40 to 60%. Join the conversation on Thursday April 22 as the PMC explores how to keep product management values-- defining target markets, focusing on customer needs, ensuring profitability, competitive analysis and a drive to ROI -- in a world of sprints, backlogs, minimal marketable features and daily scrum meetings. We'll start with a little history on how the Product Owner role emerged and then launch into a Case Study on a successfully transitioned Product Management department now using Agile to bring products to market. We'll finish the evening with an interactive Q&A.

Startup junkies, networkers, folks interested in learning new things and meeting new people, activists, and fun people!

Here's the gist:
o We were inspired by a fantastic recurring Portland happy hour event called Beer and Blog semi-coordinated by Silicon Florist & others.
o We liked that it's recurring and in a set-location and you can just put it on your calendar, and there will always be a few folks to catch up with.
o Folks who start companies are frequently inundated with coffee/lunch requests. This gives you a way to aggregate them and make intros/network in real-time.

Idea is that maybe we bring in speakers from time to time. Maybe tech-related, or maybe just cool/fun to help you learn something new/meet someone new.

Portland, OR 97 -

The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN), Software Association of Oregon (SAO), Oregon Business Association (OBA) and the Portland Business Alliance are presenting the 2010 Gubernatorial Candidate Forums.

The Republican Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Tuesday, April 27 at 1849 SW Salmon St. in Portland. It will feature Republican candidates Allen Alley (www.allenalley.com and Chris Dudley (www.chrisdudley.com).

NW Biodiesel Network Monthly Meeting: Marine Use of Biodiesel

Use of biodiesel on the water has a tremendous impact on the marine environment. The Washington State Ferry System leads the world in use of biodiesel on the water. What is the status of their biodiesel testing, use, and availability statewide? What challenges does the ferry system face going forward? What about other commercial uses of biodiesel in the marine environment? We are pleased to present an update from Paul Brodeur, Washington State Department of Transportation, Director of Vessel Maintenance, Preservation and Engineering. In 2009, Paul received the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Official’s President’s Award for Water Transportation, for work directly related to clean fuels and biodiesel. This is a great opportunity to learn from a world leader on how Washington State is leading the world in Marine Use of Biodiesel. Get your questions answered! 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Seattle Phinney Center, 6532 Phinney Ave. N, Seattle WA 98103. Cost is Free. Information at www.nwbiodiesel.org/.

Organized by Meetul Shah meetuls@knouen.com

------ What is it: -----------
It's mostly founders\entrepreneurs get together to network and learn from each other. There is no fixed agenda. Sometimes there's a "table topic" proposed in advance. Some discussions that have happened recently: * People discuss what they're doing and get feedback * People have announced things they're doing and gotten good Q&A time * People have mentioned an idea they had for a business or web site and pros and cons were discussed * People asked for tips: Company formation, co-founder, funding, where to host, what co-working spaces are good, tradeoffs of different dev environments, etc We usually have anywhere from 5 to 25 people show up, couple service providers also show up once in a while If you have a particular topic you'd like to discuss and/or are looking for feedback, we'll probably discuss it. Also, it's at Tully's, so some people have been known to drink coffee. There is free WiFi if you care.

Description
It's time for another Portland Data Visualization Meetup. The last one occurred on November 3rd, 2009. A number of things have happened since then, like Marshall Kikpatrick's coverage of #pdxboom, the release of Lee Byron's Stacked Graph Source Code, Ben Stabler's development of a Flex/Flash data visualization platform and R visualizations, and Aaron Parecki's continued GPS visualization experiments.

We'll have four main presentations from members of the Portland tech community a bunch of networking time. Webtrends will again graciously host us on their top floor.

The event is open to everyone interested in or working in the field of data visualization. This means designers, programmers, information architects, data miners, anthropologists, ect. We're expecting a similar amount of people to last time (probably around 20-30 people).

Bring a passion for data visualization, and a mind open to exploring new ideas and concepts.
