We encourage professionals from different industries to attend, so everyone's networks can expand.
Free registration + great happy hour + great PDX connections = time well spent!
Blitz (Pearl) is open to minors until 9pm.
Where to park: If you're lucky, you can get metered street parking, but if you want a cheap garage, use Smart Park. |

The space will offer classrooms, tools, programs, and experts who will work together to solve local and global problems. Tenants of all sectors will work in close proximity in a shared work space that fosters collaboration, community, and participation to generate social and ecological solutions. Join in the conversation and talk with us about HATCH!

About The Social Innovation Forum
The Springboard Social Innovation Forum offers a monthly event designed to support those interested in creating a better future. Our focus is to help practitioners or potential practitioners of social projects push beyond discussion and debate into action. Each Forum will inspire and teach with ideas, powerful role models, and stories. Speakers, content experts, panels, and workshops will help you improve your strategies for planning and launching effective social ventures. The Forum will create a context to connect, learn, and take action around ideas that lead to tangible change—all in a venue designed for building community.
The Forum is intended to attract people with a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but with a common interest—making a difference. If you are getting tired of waiting for someone else to step up to take on issues you care about, come see how this can be a place to make a difference, here or around the world. We invite people from both the business and non-profit community—investors and activists—to join in, work together, and make this a model for other cities to adopt.
Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php

How to learn to parse huge XML documents by doing it wrong for 5 years
speaker: Tyler Riddle
When XML documents can't fit into memory the vast majority of solutions
available on CPAN are no longer available to you; when the XML
documents are so large they take up to 16 hours to process with the
standard tools for handling large documents your hands are tied even
more. Tyler will cover his learning experiences creating the
Parse::MediaWikiDump and MediaWiki::DumpFile modules which are made to
handle the 24 gigabyte English Wikipedia dump files in a reasonable
time frame.
1) Real world benchmarks of C and perl libraries used to process huge
XML documents.
2) The dirty little secret about XS and what it means for you in this
context.
3) The evolution of the implementation of a nice interface around event
oriented (SAX style) XML parsing.
4) Why XML::LibXML::Reader and XML::CompactTree are your friends and
how to tame them.
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab. |

Description
We move back to the east side, courtesy of Hash Restaurant and Portland Groupon. Eva scored a half-off-breakfast thingy, $12 for $25, so by all means be really nice to her for the next week and who knows? you may get a free ride.
My own attempts at adding a second Groupon to the fray were foiled by an extremely busy day and an adamant refusal to use Facebook Connect to login. I should have just bitten the bullet and done it (I eventually capitulated to get cheap acupuncture).
As always, come prepared to buy your own breakfast and you can dance and sing if you are the beneficiary of coupon goodness in any way. Lots to talk about - IP8, the nascent pdxbreakfast.com, and more... |

Don't Miss Portland Business Journal's March 18 Power Breakfast with Walter Robb, President of Whole Foods
President and COO Walter Robb has had a long and varied entrepreneurial history in natural foods ranging from retailer to farmer to consultant. After running his own natural foods store for 10 years, he moved to Berkley to manage one of the "Living Foods" stores, eventually becoming the manager of all 3 of the company's locations.
He was then ready to open his own store again in Mill Valley, and was half way to raising the capital when John Mackey of Whole Foods made him an offer he couldn't refuse - build and run the Mill Valley store as a Whole Foods Market store. In 1992, he opened Whole Foods Market's twelfth store where he was store team leader for one year before becoming the president of the Northern Pacific region.
Under Robb's leadership, the Northern Pacific region grew from two to seventeen stores, including four acquisitions. Robb then became executive vice-president of operations in 2000, chief operating officer in 2001 and co-president in 2004. He currently oversees six of Whole Foods Market's 11 regions and serves on the Whole Planet Foundation board of directors.
Robb graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Stanford University in 1976 and is the proud father of a daughter and two sons.
Don't miss the fascinating discussion!

But wait, there's more. As a bialy expert (I grew up eating them from THE bialy source in NY and read Mimi Sheraton's "The Bialy Eaters"), I will be critiquing Kenny & Zuke's bialys for your entertainment.

Building Refactoring Tools for Functional Languages
Details:
* Presenter: Prof. Simon Thompson
* Date: Thursday, March 25, 2010
* Time: 10:30am
Abstract: Refactoring is the process of changing the design of a program without changing what it does. Typical refactorings, such as function extraction and generalisation, are intended to make a program more amenable to extension, more comprehensible and so on. Refactorings differ from other sorts of program transformation in being applied to source code (rather than within the bowels of a compiler), and in having an effect across a code base. Because of this, there is a need to give (semi-)automated support to the process. This talk will reflect on our experience of building tools to refactor functional programs written in Haskell (HaRe?) and Erlang (Wrangler). In doing this we will address system design, the pragmatics of system take-up, as well as contrasting the style of refactoring and tooling for Haskell and Erlang.
Bio: Simon Thompson is a Professor of Logic and Computation at the University of Kent. |

Abstract
Many of you may have heard about "wicked problems". For example, in many cases one can define the problem, then pursue a solution; but with wicked problems, one can't define the problem well until they finally have the solution. Wicked problems have several other interesting characteristics as well. An approach of "taming wicked problems" contradicts the wisdom of trying to make the nature and complexity of the solution fit the nature and
complexity of the problem.
The concept of wicked problems can be used as a paradigm for understanding many real world situations, including many in software development, managing teams and leading projects, organizational change, strategic planning, and more. In this presentation, you'll hear about 7 principles that can be applied for dealing with wicked problems. We'll look at several examples of problems, some more wicked than others, and how to analyze and deal with them. We'll also look at several seminal ideas in software engineering and see how the principles were used. Finally, we'll gather some problems from the audience and practice characterizing the problems and applying the principles for planning how to cope with them.

Most recently he worked at Intel for 10 years with several product teams and business groups on software product quality, product life cycles and several areas of software engineering. He led CMM and product life cycle assessments and organized and led follow-on improvement programs. Today, Bill is the President of the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC).
